IT WAS his kids pester power that pushed Michael Sherlock to buy the Cold Rock ice cream chain and get back to work. Mr Sherlock started his new job yesterday as boss of the newly created Franchised Food Company, majority owned by Melbourne businessman Stan Gordon and his business partner Dani Teer. Two years ago, Mr Sherlock's Brumby's Bakeries chain was absorbed by the Retail Food Group in a hostile takeover, and he has been consulting to various franchise chains ever since.

A bread company boss has scooped a new role at an ice-cream chain after a takeover from Franchised Food Company. The company, owned by Melbourne-based businessman Stan Gordon, acquired the 87 Cold Rock ice-cream stores on September 4, appointing former Brumby's Bakeries chief Michael Sherlock as executive chairman. Mr Sherlock, who was at the helm of Brumby's Bakeries from 1999 to 2007, said Cold Rock had enormous growth potential.

Franchised Food, which already owns Mr Whippy and Pretzel World, recently acquired 87 Cold Rock ice-cream stores. Franchised Food owner Stan Gordon said there were plans for more franchises in the fast-food scene. Elsewhere, the Coco Cubano beverage house has opened a store in Darlinghurst, with a Parramatta one to follow.
